Starlings
Starlings
Several hundred winter evenings have been spent during the past ten years observing and documenting the habits of a particular roost where northern European starlings flee south from the frozen arctic climes for shelter and, primarily, winter food sources from the warmer (generally unfrozen) land of surrounding Cornish farms, where they also try their utmost to scavenge from the farmers’ animal feed stores too.
The starlings present a mesmerizing spectacle of murmuration when the conditions on any given evening prompt their instinct for doing so. Such dynamic displays offer a marvellous reward for the hours of painstaking time watching and patiently waiting evening after evening; for such murmurations are never assured.
